Every time there is a ice storm or a blizzard we have blackouts because the ice builds up on power lines and they break or short out, or tree branches fall on them, which happened in the US in this Blizzard in Feb 2011 or the 2003 blackout that covered 6 States and part of Canada which happened because one tree branch fell on one power line.
Same thing with hurricanes. Their winds blow down power lines and create mass blackouts, which happened with Hurricanes Katrina, Irene, and Sandy.
This is because we are all tethered by grids.
Even if we spend billions of making grids "Smart" and more efficient, power plants will still be killing us and the planet by burning coal, mountains and rivers will be destroyed by coal mining, coal miners will still die from black lung disease, and we will still have huge lagoons of coal ash,and we will still have blackouts because storms are getting worst from climate change.
Ideally I think we should tear down every grid on this planet because they generate most of the pollution from burning coal and natural gas and they cause blackouts. If everyone were truly energy independent with solar, wind, and a hydrogen fuel cell generator, we wouldn't need the grid system.
But I realize that we're addicted to grids and it's going to take time to build and install enough equipment to convert every building on the planet, and therefore I propose converting coal fired power plants to burn hydrogen which would quickly to make them all zero emission because doing so would eliminate the root cause of climate change which is pollution and not efficiency, while we are converting homes and businesses to true energy independence.
There also wouldn’t be any more deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning from people using gasoline generators in blackouts, because everyone could be using zero emission hydrogen fuel cells generators instead and not having a blackout in the first place and not be polluting themselves or the planet.
Yes, there is no solar or wind in a blizzard and too much wind and no solar in a Hurricane. Also solar panels and wind turbines may get blown way in severe storms. That’s why I'm advocating for the triple back-up of solar, wind, and hydrogen. Because in the sunny and windy days of summer, you can generate hydrogen from that extra solar and wind by electrifying water. Then store it in tanks, and use that hydrogen later in winter or during a disaster as fuel in your fuel cell for electrical power and in your heater and stove for heat and cooking. Your car can also be converted to burn hydrogen and you can be generating your own car fuel as well.
Also if we made it a national and international priority to have universal solar, wind, and hydrogen, it would revive every economy by putting millions of people back to work building, installing, selling, and maintaining it all. Also everyone would stop being held hostage to energy corporations and fluctuating prices, because everyone and all future generations would never have to pay for heating, electricity, or car fuel ever again.
It has been possible to live this way for decades already. The hydrogen fuel cell was invented in 1839, 174 years ago! Please educate yourself and your local and federal governments about these alternatives and work to implement them, because if you did it would save lives, prevent blackouts, save every economy, and it would save the planet by eliminating pollution.
